Gran Selezione Vertical Tasting

World-renowned and highly respected wine critic Jancis Robinson delivered a glowing verdict during her vertical tasting of the first three vintages of Querciabella Gran Selezione.

Crafted from the high-altitude vineyards of Ruffoli, Greve in Chianti, Querciabella Gran Selezione stands out as a remarkable expression of Sangiovese. An expert of Jancis Robinson’s caliber can truly discern and appreciate each vintage’s unique characteristics. The 2019 vintage dazzled with an extraordinary 18/20, earning rave reviews for its captivating depth, perfectly balanced acidity, and the sheer allure of Sangiovese. The 2018, notable for its ripe fruit and lower acidity, delivered a sweeter yet persistent expression, scoring 17/20. Meanwhile, the 2017 struck a chord with its tangy acidity, pure Sangiovese structure, and elegant, bone-dry finish. Despite their differences, all three vintages underscore Querciabella’s mastery in producing exceptional wines from this revered grape.

Gran Selezione 2019 · Chianti Classico DOCG
“Mid crimson. Really very glorious. This showcases Sangiovese’s innately appetising nature with real breadth and depth. Tannins are there but only in the background and the acidity is perfectly balanced with the spicy fruit. No excess sweetness. Subtle and satisfying already. But this will surely have a long life, too. Really complete and gorgeous.” —JS

Gran Selezione 2018 · Chianti Classico DOCG
“Paler than the 2017. Mid garnet and a suggestion of oak on the nose. The particularly ripe fruit slightly disguises the ultra-digestible, appetising nature of the carefully selected Sangiovese parcel that informs this wine. Chestnut notes and still quite a bit of tannin. Much sweeter than the 2017 with lower acidity. Still a good drink but perhaps less obviously Sangiovese. Still impressively persistent though.”—JS

Gran Selezione 2017 · Chianti Classico DOCG
“Light nose with a strong suggestion of tangy acidity that’s borne out on the palate with its notes of autumn mulch and leather. Pure Sangiovese structure with some smoothness and impressive persistence. Very suave indeed with a bone-dry finish which opens out like a peacock’s tale, or a fine burgundy.”  —JS
