Walter Speller rewards Querciabella with top spots in Chianti Classico report.
It is our great pleasure to share the latest reviews of Querciabella 2019 and Riserva 2018 by Walter Speller, Italian specialist for Jancisrobinson.com. In his annual two-piece report – Chianti Classico in 2022 – which includes more than 200 tasting notes, both wines came out on top in their own vintage category.
Querciabella 2019 · 18/20
“Just mid ruby. Perfumed but shy nose with hints of stones. Supple, suave and elegant and with a full aromatic spread on the palate. Great polish and shine. Fantastic crunchy tannins. A real beauty.“ —WS
Riserva 2018 · 18/20
“Lustrous crimson. Pure raspberry with the polish of oak, but barely noticeable. Beautiful precision on the palate with raspberry, jewel-like acidity and fine polished tannins. Gorgeous length and style.” —WS
Looking at the state of the Gallo Nero in 2022, Speller highlights the outstanding quality across the board. Thanks to reduced reliance on international varieties and with oak no longer dominant, Sangiovese can finally express its brilliance and innate ability to interpret the terroir. With the release of the Chianti Classicos 2020 in the pipeline, producers have three outstanding vintages on hand and a golden opportunity to consolidate the appellation’s prominence among the world’s greatest wine territories.
