Discover Vallemaggiore, Querciabella’s Experimental Vineyard in Maremma.

Under another Beautiful Oak, a new venture begins.

Maremma is a unique land, and we at Querciabella deeply appreciate its distinctive value. Our winemaking philosophy, combined with the region’s extraordinary expressive richness, allows us to create unique wines with a contemporary character that reflect this territory’s remarkable ability to adapt flexibly to change. Our newest vineyard, Vallemaggiore, perfectly embodies this vision.

Maremma Wine Lab

Querciabella Maremma vineyards are located in Alberese, south of Grosseto, nestled behind the picturesque hills of the Uccellina Natural Park. Spanning over 40 hectares, these vineyards are harmoniously integrated into a landscape of rolling hills adorned with ancient olive trees and lush Mediterranean vegetation, opening up to the stunning blue expanse of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Leveraging our extensive experience in organic farming from Chianti Classico, we saw Maremma as a fertile ground for further advancement and perfection of our winemaking techniques while staying true to our commitment to environmental harmony.

In 1997, we acquired 20 hectares at Banditella 1 in Sugherrettaia, expanding further in 2002 with Banditella 3 (formerly Podere Marras), enlarging our estate to approximately 33 hectares. Currently, we cultivate eleven grape varieties, including Sangiovese, Vermentino, and international varieties, complemented by those typical of southern France, enabling us to fully express the winemaking potential of this exceptional region.

The Vallemaggiore Vineyard

In the spring of 2024, we planted approximately 6 hectares of vines, primarily Vermentino and red varieties typical of the Rhône Valley, as part of our ambitious Vallemaggiore project. This vineyard, rising to about 95 meters above sea level, offers breathtaking views spanning from Castiglione della Pescaia to the island of Elba and the Uccellina National Park hills. Refreshing marine breezes provide relief to these sun-kissed slopes, even on the hottest days.

A dedicated section of Vallemaggiore is allocated to the cultivation of Syrah, employing the high-density bush-trained method with a “settonce” planting layout. This innovative approach, known as “ordo septuncialis“, was originally developed by Roman military engineers. It arranges vines in a regular hexagon around a central point, providing several advantages: optimal utilization of the root system, extended sun exposure for the canopy and excellent air circulation within the vineyard’s central areas. The rest of the vineyard follows a standard planting layout, strategically oriented to optimize quality and production, prevent soil erosion, and minimize environmental impact by adhering to the natural contours of the hill.

“In an era of significant climate challenges, we continue to explore and adopt low-impact ecological agricultural and winemaking techniques to preserve our wines’ aromatic intensity and freshness. With this vision, the newly planted Vallemaggiore vineyard promises a path of innovation, enhancing the quality and diversity of our range and reflecting Maremma’s extraordinary expressive richness.”

Rooting For Next Generation Wines

Constant experimentation has always defined our approach in Maremma, made possible by a favorable climate, diverse soils, a well-established winemaking tradition, and openness to adopting new technologies and sustainable practices. In an era of significant climate changes and beyond, we will continue to explore and adopt low-impact ecological agricultural techniques and less extractive winemaking and fermentation methods, such as whole cluster or whole berry fermentation. Our goal is to preserve our wines’ aromatic intensity and freshness while maintaining a sustainable and environmentally respectful footprint. In this vision, the newly planted Vallemaggiore vineyard promises a path of innovation, enhancing the quality and diversity of our wines, reflecting Maremma’s remarkable ability to adapt flexibly to change.

Taste the Difference

Mongrana is the result of this continuous quest, a blend expanded over the years to nearly ten red grape varieties, individually harvested and fermented according to their maturity levels. Each vintage gives life to a unique blend that consistently offers a generous yet elegant drinking experience. Since 2020, Mongrana Rosso has been joined by Mongrana Bianco, a joyful and summery wine with an elegant mineral signature. Completing the selection is Turpino, Querciabella’s Super Coastal wine distinguished by a fine barrel maturation typical of the most exclusive wines, comprising three noble varieties – Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc – perfectly suited to Maremma.
